UNSW Learning and Teaching Unit

Flexibility, community and privacy

A thoughtful response to a complex brief.

A new Learning and Teaching Unit (LTU) was required at the University of New South Wales for their Media Development team, the new space was to be installed within the Library and required spaces for training and meetings as well as the provision of a flexible staff workspace.

BSA’s experience and extensive knowledge of the principles to be observed in the provision of back-of-house and modern working environments allowed for the successful completion of this demanding project. The provision of a stimulating atmosphere of community and privacy within a large open floorplate was an essential objective.

The design for the new LTU was based on a centralised service spine, with public and semi-private functions creating a threshold between the private workspaces. Material transparency and opacity were used to provide visual connection or separation, as required, between the various work areas.
