Thoughtful update to a heritage-listed residence
BSA was commissioned by the owners to design extensions and to carry out refurbishment work on this substantial and attractive heritage listed residence. The scope of work included extensive site works involving garaging, vehicle access, a pool, paving and landscaping. The site was located on a corner block containing existing significant trees that were important to the precinct and which therefore, together with the heritage connotations, attracted considerable local council attention.
The client brief was specific and comprehensive regarding the desired accommodation and the lifestyle to be accommodated and enhanced however, they were determined not to allow preconceived ideas about the outcome to compromise our creative approach during the design process. The result was a dwelling and landscape solution that was most satisfying for the client, the architect and the community.
Interaction with the client was excellent and this led to a design that focused on creating modern and inviting enclosed spaces, while sitting seamlessly within the existing environment. While the new facilities juxtapose the existing traditional home, the use of naturalistic materials helps the additional forms sit within the enhanced landscape, rather than overshadow the existing site.
